The eponymous program is inspired by late writer-director Charles Officer, who mentored countless artists and highlighted the cultural nuances of the Jamaican-Canadian experience. Officer’s legacy is rooted in his perspective as a Black Canadian of Jamaican descent, creating a rich tapestry of stories that transcend limitations and celebrate cultural diversity. His work has left an indelible mark on Canadian film history, showcasing the poetry and pain of life in Toronto and the power of storytelling.
The HOV Charles Officer Mentorship Program aims to empower a new generation of Jamaican-Canadian filmmakers through culturally immersive sessions and experiences. Participants will gain knowledge of their history, heritage, and roots while working through various stages of pre-production, production, and post-production with seasoned industry experts.
