Learn authentic dances from the Motherland in Toronto
Yensa Festival, an organization that promotes awareness and recognition of Black female dance artists and African and Afro-diaspora cultures, is hosting its Winter/Spring 2025 AFRICA VIBES Dance Workshop Series in Toronto from March to April.
These dynamics workshops will see dance instructors share their expertise in movements rooted in the African diaspora with participants. Whether you’re a beginner or experienced, these classes are designed for all levels, with a progression that builds confidence step by step. These workshops are an inclusive space of movement, music, and shared cultural expression that is open to everyone.
To kick off Spring in March, the YENSA Festival honors the Black sisterhood and the contributions of Caribbean women in Canada through AFRICA VIBES: Afro-Caribbean & Sabar Dance Workshops. These workshops celebrate the resilience, joy, and empowerment found in Afro-Caribbean and Senegalese dance traditions.
- Saturday, March 15th – Sabar with Imania Fatima Detry (Chicago)
- Saturday, March 22nd – Afro-Caribbean with Akua
The series concludes in April with a grounded movement of African dances. Instructor Lua Shayenne, accompanied by live percussion, invites you to celebrate your body as the Temple of the Spirit, intimately connected to Mother Earth.
Through the grounded movement of dances from Africa, Lua Shayenne will guide participants in shedding old patterns and stepping into new possibilities through a Harvest rhythm, connecting you with the pulse of the Earth and honoring the spirit within.
AFRICA VIBES not only amplifies their voices but also contributes to the preservation and promotion of diverse dance forms. Come with an open heart, be ready to cultivate new friendships, and embrace the journey of a movement rooted in spirit.
