Toronto Mendelssohn Choir graces the stage to exhilarate Toronto audiences this March
Led by maestro Jean-Sébastien Vallée, the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers grace the stage again following their lauded debut season last year.
With Winterreise, they bring their signature artistry to one of Schubert’s most beloved compositions. The TMSingers present a fresh adaptation of Schubert’s work, skillfully arranged for choir, baritone, and piano by composer Gregor Meyer in 2017.
Set against the backdrop of Wilhelm Müller‘s poignant poetry, Winterreise recounts the tale of a wanderer’s heartache and desolation amidst a wintry landscape, with the choir serving as a powerful vessel to amplify the emotional depth of the narrative. The ensemble is joined by renowned Canadian baritone Brett Polegato and Juno Award-winning pianist Philip Chiu for this moving interpretation. The program is rounded out by works of Fanny Mendelssohn-Hensel, one of the first published female composers, and Clara Schumann, widely regarded as one of the most significant composers and pianists of the Romantic era. These works, intertwined with the thematic elements of “Winterreise,” offer meditations on themes of love and loss.
