The Walking Griot, a collective for Black children and youth, brings its joyous new play, “LULU,” to Toronto audiences as part of the 2025 Toronto Fringe Festival. The play runs from July 2nd to 13th at the Soulpepper’s Theatre Tank House Theatre.
Inspired by the essence of Louise Bennett-Coverley, “LULU” will take attendees on a journey into a world of Afro-Caribbean folklore, legacy, and ancestry.
LULU centers on the journey of 10-year-old Lulu Kromanti as she ventures into a world of Caribbean mythology and fantasy while on a quest to save her ailing grandmother. It’s a tale of self-discovery, cultural inheritance, and high stakes.
The play “LULU” is written and produced by Sashoya Simpson and directed by d’bi.young anitafrika
- Sashoya Simpson is the recent recipient of the inaugural 2025 Che Kothari Artist & Instigator Award.
- d’bi.young anitafrika is a celebrated Jamaican dub poet, 3x Dora Award winner, and recent recipient of the Johanna Metcalf Performing Art Prizes
