Toronto fashion designer Emefa Kuadey is bringing personality to minimalism through ISRAELLA KOBLA, her contemporary clothing and accessories brand built around structure, femininity, and craftsmanship.

With a background in civil engineering, Emefa brings a distinctly technical approach to fashion, creating elevated wardrobe pieces that balance clean lines and thoughtful construction with personality and expression.
Her designs are minimal but full of personality, rooted in the belief that clothing should be thoughtfully made, beautifully constructed, and designed to last.
Through ISRAELLA KOBLA, Emefa creates wardrobe pieces for women who move with confidence and purpose, designed to carry them through special moments, everyday life, and everything in between.
From Engineering to Fashion
For Emefa, fashion began as curiosity. Engineering was her first love.
Long before she founded the brand, ISRAELLA KOBLA, she was drawn to sewing, making clothes, and exploring how garments came together.

At first, it was a hobby. But during a semester off from university in 2012, a trip to Ghana changed the course of her creative journey.
While there, her aunt introduced her to the basics of sewing and pattern drafting. Emefa picked it up quickly, and when she returned to Canada, she began making pieces for friends, from birthday outfits to graduation dresses.
Still, fashion remained a passion rather than a career path. At the time, Emefa was on a very different professional track. She went on to work as a civil engineer for nearly three years before deciding to leave the field, move back to Ontario, attend fashion school, and build what would eventually become ISRAELLA KOBLA.
A Name Rooted in Memory
The brand’s name carries deep personal meaning. ISRAELLA KOBLA is a combination of Emefa’s middle name and her brother’s middle name. After her brother’s passing in 2012, she took time away from school and began learning to sew as a way to cope.

“My company is dedicated to him and his memory,” she shares.
That emotional foundation gives the brand a quiet depth beneath its refined exterior.
At first glance, ISRAELLA KOBLA is known for clean lines, thoughtful structure, and elevated wardrobe pieces. But underneath the minimalism is a story of grief, memory, discipline, and transformation.
Bringing Personality to Minimalism
Emefa describes ISRAELLA KOBLA’s design philosophy as minimal, but not in the conventional sense. She is inspired by the idea that minimalism is not the absence of something, but the presence of the right amount.
“At ISRAELLA KOBLA, we bring personality to minimalism,” she says. “Our pieces are boldly feminine, effortlessly structured, and always intentional.”

Her lived experience across different parts of the world has also shaped the brand’s creative language. Born in London and raised partly in Preston, England, Accra, Ghana, and Canada, Emefa’s design point of view blends edge, personality, and uniqueness.
From England, she says she absorbed a rawness and slight edge. In Ghana, she saw the personality and expressive power of dressing come alive. In Canada, she understood the brand’s own uniqueness. That mix of influences has become central to ISRAELLA KOBLA’s identity. The brand feels familiar yet fresh, elegant, and distinctive.
The Fashion Engineer and Creative Process
Before fashion, Emefa’s background in civil engineering deeply influenced the way she approaches design. She often refers to herself as a “fashion engineer” because her process mirrors the structure and problem-solving of engineering.

Like an engineer, she begins her designs with a vision and works backward to understand how to make it possible. Whether she is designing a garment, refining a silhouette, or solving a construction challenge, the process is thoughtful, technical, and precise.
“Whether it’s buildings, roads, or clothing, it all follows the same thoughtful, structured process,” she says.
That attention to construction is one of the defining qualities of the brand. For Emefa, tailoring is essential. The inside of a garment matters just as much as the outside, because true quality is often felt before it is seen.

“I’ve always believed that the inside of a garment should look just as good, if not better, than the outside,” she explains.
Sustainability also influences how the brand approaches design and production.
Rather than chasing fast-moving trends, ISRAELLA KOBLA creates pieces intended to work across seasons. A top from one collection can pair naturally with a skirt from another, helping customers build a cohesive wardrobe over time instead of replacing it from season to season.
Designing for the Intentional Woman
Who is the ISRAELLA KOBLA woman?
“She’s someone who has a strong sense of style but doesn’t need to chase trends,” Emefa says. “Everything she wears is chosen with care, just like how she approaches life.”
For Emefa, modern luxury is not simply about price or exclusivity. It is about intentionality, quality, functionality, and the ability to curate a wardrobe that aligns with one’s values and lifestyle.

“I think modern luxury is really about intentionality,” she says. “It’s having the ability to curate your own wardrobe, choosing pieces that not only feel elevated but also align with your values and lifestyle.”
That philosophy extends throughout the brand, from the materials and construction to the way individual pieces are designed to remain relevant beyond a single season.
Building a Fashion Brand in Toronto
While the brand continues to grow, producing locally in Toronto comes with challenges. For Emefa, one of the biggest roadblocks has been finding experienced sewers who can execute the complexity behind her seemingly simple designs.

Although the pieces may appear minimal, the construction requires skill, precision, and craftsmanship.
“The difficulty is that many young fashion school graduates today aren’t drawn to sewing as a craft,” she says. “As a result, I rely on an aging generation that still has that deep skill and craftsmanship.”
Despite the challenges, the brand has reached important milestones. One of the most memorable was the Spring/Summer 2024 collection. After nearly four years in business, it was Emefa’s second official collection and the moment when everything began to click.
The collection debuted at both New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week, and it also led to a partnership with Nordstrom.
For Emefa, that season was a clear expression of what ISRAELLA KOBLA stands for: modern, elevated, structured, wearable, and deeply intentional.
What’s Next for ISRAELLA KOBLA
Today, ISRAELLA KOBLA’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection is out, and the brand is already in the early stages of developing Spring/Summer 2027.
Emefa is also working on a range of handbags and small leather goods, which she hopes to release toward the end of the year.

As the brand evolves, the feeling behind it remains clear. Emefa wants people to feel like they have found pieces that truly resonate with them, clothing that can move through special moments and everyday life with ease.
For Emefa, ISRAELLA KOBLA is not just about clothing. It is about memory, structure, womanhood, quality, and building a world where minimalism still has personality. It is fashion made with intention, shaped by experience, and engineered to last.
