The CaribbeanTales International Film Festival (CTFF) returns to Toronto this September, celebrating its 20th milestone year with an exciting lineup of 49 films, including premieres, shorts, retrospectives, talkbacks, and special events. Running from September 3rd to 13th in person and online until September 30th, this year’s festival is set to be one of the most vibrant editions yet.
This year’s theme, “Resilience in Motion,” will resonate throughout most of the films, offering a powerful perspective on the resolve and strength of the people of the Caribbean and within the diaspora. Every film is a window into the past, present, and future, spanning cultures, communities, and continents with depth, authenticity, and soul.

Festival Highlights
From gripping dramas and thrillers to experimental shorts, this year’s lineup will showcase 49 films representing over 15 countries. Throughout the festival, a variety of fun and engaging events are scheduled, as listed below.
September 3rd – Opening Night: Envisioning Legacies
The festival kicks off on September 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Harbourfront Centre with the premiere of Bankie Banx: King of the Dune by Nara Garber, telling the story of reggae icon Bankie Banx (also known as Anguillan Bob Dylan). Also features Jimmy Buffet, actor Kevin Bacon, and Stephen “Cat” Coore (founding guitarist with Third World). This intriguing documentary explores the life and music of reggae icon Bankie Banx, from his humble beginnings to his mainstream success as an international star.
September 6th – The Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine Birthday Celebration & Fundraiser at the Harbourfront Centre
This special evening honours the incredible Hon. Dr. Jean Augustine on her 88th birthday, featuring inspiring film screenings, live performances by Pan Fantasy led by Earl Le Pierre and Joy Lapps, plus the presentation of the Jean Augustine Excellence Award to Steelpan Ambassador Wendy Jones.
September 7th – ArtHouse at The Hub – Dundas West Studios
A showcase of daring, experimental films that push boundaries in content and style, offering bold, unconventional storytelling that challenges and inspires.
September 11th – Standout Shorts at The Hub – Dundas West Studios
Experience an unforgettable night of bold storytelling with a curated selection of standout short films that push boundaries and ignite conversation.
September 12th – LGBTQ+ Spotlight at The Hub – Dundas West Studios
This unforgettable night showcases bold, diverse voices from across the queer spectrum, each offering a unique lens on the human experience.
September 13th – Closing Night Film and Awards Ceremony
The festival concludes with a special awards ceremony and a captivating movie, “The Last Meal,” from the talented filmmaker Maryse Legagneur. This moving night of cinema reflects on the beauty and pain of saying goodbye, as well as the enduring presence of those who have shaped us.

Founded in 2006 by Frances-Anne Solomon, an award-winning filmmaker and champion for inclusive cinema, CTFF has grown into an internationally respected platform for Caribbean filmmakers. Over the past two decades, the festival has screened more than 1000 films, amplified underrepresented voices, and reshaped how Caribbean stories are seen and valued on screen.
